Accidental overdose is the leading cause of injury-related death in the United States, and is also the leading cause of death for adults aged 25-44.  For every fatal drug overdose, there are many more nonfatal overdoses.  More than 75% of the nearly 107,000 drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2021 involved an opioid.  Analyzing patterns in both fatal and nonfatal opioid overdoses can help allocate resources, inform response, and prevent future deaths.
